From Boogie Board to a Spooky Tombstone!

Halloween being my favorite time of the year, means I love to decorate!  And every year I do things just a little bit different. This year we were inspired by the shapes of our pool toys to make a grave yard! We have had hand made and store bought tombstones in the past. They look great for Halloween but are hard to store because of their size and fragility. This year I thought to dress up our boogie boards as a tombstone because I noticed they had the same shape as a tombstone! :)

Materials needed:

  • boogie board
  • kick board
  • black & white trash bags
  • black duct tape
  • plastic lawn fence
  • lawn stakes or dowels
  • scissors

We started by covering the plastic lawn fence with strips of black tape. I helped cut the strips and Dyllan did all the covering.

No worries if it’s not perfect…adds to the over all effect!

Next Dyllan made the little tombstone (kick board) and I’ll show you how to make the larger one next.

You will need one black trash bag and one white, black duct tape and scissors.

Begin by securing the board leash with tape in place. Then cover the board with the black trash bag, to cover the design.

Fold it over and tape in place so the other side is flat and smooth.

Proceed to cover with the white bag, folding and taping so one side is  flat and smooth as well.

Decide what you want on your tombstone and if working with a child, sketch it on a piece of paper as a guide. Then tear or cut your tape in 1″ or less strips and them cut into pieces. Use the pieces to spell out R.I.P. and any thing else.

Don’t worry if the bag does not cover the bottom of the board as that is the part to be “buried”

Tape your garden stakes to the back of each board. We used a Halloween lawn decoration for the back of the little tombstone.

Our little patch of garden in front of our house gets little or no sun, so grass grows very unevenly. For the large tombstone, I used shrub clippings and then put a old pair of Dyllan’s shoes in front of the little board.

If you want to punch up the effect, put some black plastic spiders on the tombstones with glue and position a black light on the ground in front of the tombstones.

Clean up is a breeze when Halloween is over. You just uncover the boards, throw away the plastic bags and tape, and store them with your pool toys till next year!

  1. I love this idea! Storing decorations is always a challenge. Pool/Beach toys are not used much in October. I love this idea for Reusing them.
